Fourth of July and Your Pup

The Fourth of July holiday is right around the corner.

The beauty of fireworks to our eyes is spectacular. Yet, to a dog, the noise can be extremely frightening!

Many dogs become so frightened that they will "Take off".

So, during this upcoming holiday, make sure you give your pup a little extra TLC.

Teenager Kills a Kitten in NYC

Sadly and horribly, a teenager from NYC burned a kitten to death. How? The teen put the kitten, Tiger Lilly, in a hot oven. The teen said her actions were some kind of joke.

To read more about this teen's disgraceful action, see ASPCA.org.

Teens who hurt animals have a even a greater chance of harming people at any given time.

If you know anyone who practices animal cruelty, go on the website listed above to find out how you can report the person(s) anonomously.

So, so sad...

Sleeping Green Has Benefits

Last week I purchased a "green" mattress (and two pillows) that was made with natural latex and organic essential oils. Included were organic cotton covers.

Why? I know that it's truly unhealthy to sleep on a mattress that is made from polyurethane and synthetic fibers. Did I mention that these commonly used materials contain formaldehyde, pesticides, toxic foams, perfluoroctanoic or PFOA (as a stain repellant) and many other toxic materials? All of which "out-gas". Who needs to to breathe in potential carcinogens and low cost chemical flame retardants?

The common mattress production process is not eco-friendly. While, on the other hand, my Essentia Mattress is made with high quailty natural materials, will last up to 30 years and will biodegrade in a few years time. Sadly, conventional mattresses remain in landfills for centuries!

I won't need to purchase another mattress until I'm about 70 years old! Plus, it's good for my health and it's planet-friendly.

Their website is EssentiaMattress.com

Reverse the Aging Process and Feed Kids Better -- All at Once

When I speak to a room full of moms and dads, I talk about discipline techniques and feeding kids for better health and higher energy levels. In fact, I mention "antioxidants" because of their reversal of the aging process. More importantly, it's so easy to give in to "Johnny" and pack lunch without a single piece of fruit or vegetable.

The antioxidants found in fresh fruits and vegetables are so very important when it comes to our overall health.

The vitamins, minerals and other nutrients found in fresh produce help protect and repair cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals, in turn, cause aging and a host of degenerative health conditions.

When I visit schools and parks and I am shocked to see the number of kids who toss their fruit into the garbage. So lets talk produce...

At least 5 servings of produce should be eaten daily. It's the parents job to serve it. If a child comes home from school and the snack offered is fresh fruit or a salad, then you're off to a great start.

If "Johnny" refuses to eat fresh fruit or veggies and spends all afternoon eating genetically modified ("Franken-food"), microwaved popcorn and pre-packaged chips and cookies filled with artery-clogging, partially-hydrogenated oils, then some change needs to take place. (See my previous posts on genetically modied foods and why we should avoid them).

When it comes to serving our families higher quality foods, it's easier to do "nothing" rather then make a few changes.

Parents ALWAYS tell me that they know their kids should be eating more fruits and veggies, but, they won't because the pre-packaged, comfort foods are the ones they go for.

And, the big brand-name snack companies are not going to put warning labels on the pre-packaged foods containing genetically-modified ingredients, artificial chemicals and additives and partially hydrogenated oils. It's all about inexpensive ingredients, satisfying taste-buds and bigger profits.

A few years ago, Dr. Brian Clement, Director of the Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida was a few feet away from me and said, "This is going to be unhealthiest generation of kids we have ever had."

His words struck a chord because their is so much disease around us today. If we continue to feed our kids with one eye closed, then disease is going to continue to get worse.

What to do? Say, "Beginning Monday, one or two fresh fruit choices will be available after school from now until the end of the school year. Then tell "Johnny" to write down his top 5 favorite fruits (or veggies)."

My kids know that this is the rule in my house. I have explained why and expect that it is followed. Yes, there are a few days that we make exceptions. But, I get right back on track a day later. Dessert foods and comfort foods are allowed after dinner - only.

The antioxidants in found in fruits and veggies are beneficial! Colorful fruits and veggies - especially those with purple, blue, red, orange, and yellow hues are superb. Don't forget garlic...it's another one of Mother Nature's gifts.

Pollution levels are EXTREMELY higher today than they were in the 60's, when I was a little kid. The free radicals destroying our cells faster and faster due to stress, air pollution, chemicals in the household products (Just walk down the name-brand household cleaner, air freshener and laundry detergent aisle in the grocery stores), and the radiation from tvs and computers are just to name a few...

Therefore, for our families' sake and health, eat more produce (organic, whenever possible), switch to green cleaners, buy local and pesticide-free produce, limit tv/computer time, avoid toxic lawn pesticides and fertilizers, buy low VOC paint, excercise and look up other ways you can go "greener".

Pick up the Phone and Call the Secretary of Agriculture

For the safety of our health and the environment, do not support genetic engineering. Let your voice be heard!

Call the Secretary of Agriculture-USDA at 202-720-3631 and tell the office staff that you do NOT support Big Biotech.

Sadly, corporations such as Monsanto and Aventis claim that the technology of Genetic Engineering will end hunger, produce foods that are the same as food that has not been genetically modified...

For more information on genetically engineered foods see some of my past posts: 4/21/09, 4/27/09 and 5/6/09

In my ebook, which is found on organicfeelsbest.com, a researched facts are provided...and why we should avoid these "Franken Foods."

The Biotech Corporations are making huge profits. These corporations are not concerned about us or the environment.

Have You Met Your Meat?

Sadly, many Americans are finally believing that the meat we're eating may not be as healthy as once thought. I, on the other hand, have been lecturing, talking about and writing about the disgraces of factory farming for many years now.

Common sense will allow you to realize that if you eat livestock from filthy, very filthy conditions, then there will be a disaster waiting to happen.

Furthermore, the livestock are sick and treated so badly that a horror film probably wouldn't be able to compete given a "back stage" pass into a factory farm.

Time and time again people say, "There's nothing wrong with eating meat."

If your meat comes from a factory farm beware of Mad Cow disease (Commonly mistaken for Alzheimer's) or swine flu.

To read more about Mad Cow disease meet the wonderful fellow and friend of mine...Howard Lyman at www.madcowboy.com
